Like all good New Yorkers, we in Foodie Pleasure-land love a good slice of pizza. Imagine our excitement when we learned that new pizza shop was opening up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Always eager to learn about new small business ventures and food, we had to learn more!
Leah Wiseman-Fink is the self-defined “Pizza Wife” to her husband Johnny and his business partner Aaron McCann who are behind Williamsburg Pizza, the ‘burg’s newest pizza joint. She recently shared some of the inspiration behind Williamsburg Pizza with us, as well as tips for the perfect topping.
FP: We love the fact that you’ve opened a pizza shop. Share with us how the idea came about. What was the inspiration?
WP: We have lived above the space for a long time (Johnny 10 years, me 3) and so had our eye on it. When the Chinese restaurant moved out, we moved in! There wasn’t a decent slice within six blocks of our little corner so we were happy to fill that void.
FP: Thank goodness! What’s a NY neighborhood without a spot for a great slice of pizza?!
What has been the biggest surprise about the restaurant business?
WP: How hard it is!
FP: What’s on the menu? What different types of pizza is available?
WP: We have a pizzaiolo, Nino Coniglio, who was a member of the US Pizza team and is a master dough spinner amongst other things. There is a signature margarita pie, which is delicious. The garlic knots are also to die for.
FP: That’s exciting! We had no idea there was a national pizza team, amazing!
When you are home, what are some of your favorite meals to cook? If you go out to eat, name some of your favorite places in NYC or other places you’ve visited.
WP: We eat a lot of fresh food — fish in the summer, meat and/or stews in the winter. I make a mean roasted chicken and the best brownies from an old family recipe. As for going out, we like to eat at some neighborhood spots such as the Meatball Shop, the Post Office, Sel de Mer, and St. Anselm. For a special treat, both Gramercy Tavern & Blue Hill at Stone Barns can’t be beat.
FP: What are some of your guilty pleasures? We like to call them foodie pleasures, hence the name. 🙂
WP: Do whiskey (for Johnny) and red wine (for me) count??? With a slice and a brownie — now that’s a foodie pleasure, if I’ve ever heard of one!
FP: Those absolutely count! Nothing like a great drink alongside a slice and brownie for dessert!
Name three individuals you would want to invite over to your pizza parlor and share a slice and drink with.
WP: Johnny says Howard Hughes and John Lennon. I say Michelle Obama (hands down!)
FP: Imagine if all three of them could be at the same table!
What are your favorite toppings on a pizza?
WP: Taleggio cheese, mushrooms, olives (maybe not at the same time)
In three words, how would your friends and family describe you.
WP: A Cute Couple 🙂
FP: A cute and creative couple! We love that you’ve created Williamsburg Pizza and can’t wait to come in for a slice or two (or a pie :)). We’ll be in soon, and in the meantime, keep us posted on all the excitement in Williamsburg!
