What better way to kick off fall than to go apple picking! With many choices in upstate NY, we decided to visit Applewood Orchards in Warwick, NY.
The sun was bright and the air was crisp as we arrived at Applewood a little after 12 noon. We certainly weren’t alone in our decision to visit the orchard; the line of cars stretched out to the beginning of the entrance! Crowds of people packed the winery, the small staging area near the live band and of course, the donut stand. At first thought, we figured the long lines and large crowds were a good thing but then we realized that since it is an early harvest this year, there might not be as many yummy apples to pick!
Luckily, we didn’t wait until late October like we did last year or else we probably wouldn’t have found too many apples on the trees. Luckily for us, there was a decent crop of crisp Macintosh apples fresh for the picking. Despite the lack of varieties, we were able to fill a large bag with some good-looking apples. (We ate our fair share while picking, too!)
No visit to an orchard is complete without fresh donuts and cider so we were sure to sit for a spell and enjoy some as we balanced the healthy apples with the sugary donuts.
What’s our plan with all our apples? Hmmm…we have some ideas. Apple pie, apple muffins, apple crisp… the possibilities are endless but we’ll keep you posted!
