Get IntoxiKated

A few things we enjoy almost as much as eating include reading tweets on Twitter, looking at pics on Instagram and reading the blogs of fellow food writers. One of our favorite blogs is Katie Schlientz’s IntoxiKate, where readers learn about places to eat and “live life deliciously.” Before attending Katie’s IntoxiKate Happy Hour at City Limits Diner in Stamford tonight, we reached out to Katie to learn more about her.

FP: We love your blog and its concept! Tell us about IntoxiKate. How did the idea come about?

KS: Thank you very much! I appreciate that, and I’m completely humbled by the support I’ve received so far. I started IntoxiKate about a year ago—I love food, and wanted to encourage people to live life deliciously, to take an active role in interesting food events and try new, innovative dishes.

FP: Do you cook at home? If so what are some of your favorite meals to prepare for yourself and/or friends?

KS: I love to cook! The first dinner I ever cooked was a box of mac and cheese—no joke! I was in sixth grade, and my mom was working late. I thought it would be a good idea to make dinner for the whole family so she wouldn’t have to when she got home. I set the table, and had everything laid out when she walked in. I can still remember the look on her face—she was so incredibly surprised and grateful. I loved her reaction so much, I made dinner for my family almost every night from that point on.

These days, I’m not using too much out of a box (I cringe when I think about that dinner now!). I have a torrid affair with my crock pot and a real fear of baking. I love to experiment with dishes I haven’t cooked, but I have a few standard go to options when friends come over: roasted chicken with lemon and fresh basil, sinigang (a Filipino soup with a tamarind base), and a cheesy crab dip (recipe from my dad).

FP: Sounds like a kind gesture led to a lifetime love of food!

When you go out to eat, name some of your favorite places in Westchester County.

KS: With IntoxiKate, I’m trying so many new restaurants all of the time. I do have a few places I frequent—you can find me enjoying lunch Chutney Masala in Irvington, or having a cocktail at the top of the Ritz Carlton at 42. I have a total food crush on Chef Christian at Fortina, and have a small obsession with the fried pickles at The Bayou.

FP: We went to Fortina recently and know exactly what you mean when you say you have food crush on Chef Christian!

What are some of your guilty pleasures? We like to call them foodie pleasures, hence the name.

KS: See, now you’re asking some dangerous questions, because we could be here all day! I happen to love food. I really enjoy it. Things that don’t last long in my refrigerator: anything pickled, tomatoes (I eat them like a normal person eats apples!), and cheese. I’ve raised more than a few eyebrows while indulging in my biggest foodie pleasure—I eat cold leftovers for breakfast (yeah, I choose cold chicken parmesan over eggs).

FP: Half of FP (Kristina) agrees with you on cheese while the other half (Allen) agrees about leftovers for breakfast.

Take your pick…beer, wine or cocktails? Sweet or savory? Classic fare or innovative dishes?

KS: Yes, please to beer, wine and cocktails. I generally go for the cocktail, but I’ll go for whatever is handy. I am not much of a sweets person—I’ll grab a bag of pretzels over cupcakes any day. While I love a classically made dish executed well, I can’t help but dive into a dish that has an innovative twist.

FP: What are your non-foodie hobbies or interests?

KS: I love to travel. I like to immerse myself in other cultures, and try new things. Last year, I skied—for the second time in my life—in Park City, Utah. A few months ago, I hiked a glacier in Iceland.

I have a few loves of my life, and one if them is a small, snaggletoothed papillon named Linus who pops up quite often in my Instagram feed. I grew up with large dogs my entire life, but this little guy stole my heart.

FP: We’re looking forward to your event tonight and will make sure to live life deliciously through your blog!
