Fun with Francine

Since meeting Francine Segan last year we’ve had the great pleasure of attending many of the events she’s hosted. Each time we see Francine speak, three things happen: we eat, laugh and learn! Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the opportunity do all three things three times!

Lavazza Tasting

With half of FP (Kristina) being an avid coffee drinker, it was a special treat to taste LavAzza coffee and also learn the background of the company during a recent tasting at Eataly. It was also an honor to meet the CEO of LavAzza USA, Ennio Ranaboldo and gain insight on Italy’s favorite coffee brand. Did you know that 80% of Italians drink LavAzza?

History of Sweets

This talk provided us flashbacks to our youth as Francine discussed the history of famous candy including Milky Way, Tootsie Rolls, Baby Ruth (did you know that Babe Ruth sued Nestle over the name?!) and other iconic brands at the 92Y. Among many facts, we learned that wax-coated candy was an innovation after electricity became common and the need for candles deceased. What was your favorite candy growing up?

Specialty Food Tasting

Last but not least, Kristina took her book club to Francine’s specialty food tasting at the 92Y. At the tasting, guests had a chance to sample a variety of items that will be featured at the Specialty Food Association’s Summer Fancy Food Show. During the tasting, we discussed a variety of longtime food trends (bacon and cupcakes are STILL big!) as well as some things to look forward to, including fruit-flavored vinegar and even more options for healthy food.
